"About Me"

Hi. My name is Telliyah Kennedy and this is my third semester at Wayne State University. I am a very out spoken person and I love to write poetry. I feel that a person can fully express them selves through writing whatever it may be. I live in the city of Detroit and I feel that my inspiration to write comes from the life that I live. I don’t just write for me, but I write for whoever I feel needs to hear it. My goal in life is to change the mind of a person, whether it is the thinking’s or just to make you stop and think about what it is that you are doing wrong or maybe even right.
I am the type of person where I like to analysis what is going on around me and try to do something about it. Living in a society where people don’t really care about what happens to people I think that someone should at least try to do something about it. At Wayne State University my major at the moment is Biology. I am going for Medical School to try to become an emergency room physician and also a research doctor to try to help find cures for Colon Cancer, MS, Ulcerative Colitis, and also Crones Disease. I want to spark the brain of someone who will do great things……
Telliyah's Analysis: Every secant of the day someone has had an encounter with racial discrimination no matter what race, color or creed you are. To fully understand how someone lives you have to live the life that they live each and every day. To go through the experiences so you can understand what it is that they go through. Blacks and whites may seem similar but in all actuality they are exceedingly different. The day to day experiences that each racial group is so diverse that studies have been made just to see how different they really are. Can the color of someone’s skin really determine the many situations and dealings that life sometime’s throws at you? Questions like this have plagued the mind of many people in today’s society. Racial discrimination will always exist due to the fact that people will be ignorant to what they don’t fully understand. The racial ignorance is based on a lack of the understanding of the opposite race, education and also family values.
In “A Class Divided”, by Jane Elliott she teaches her third grade class the importance of racial discrimination and the importance of other people’s feelings. Her objective was to teach these students, even at a young age that they can impact the thinking’s of people who are different then you are. This wasn’t a planned assignment out of the lesson plan, but it was in the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination on April 4, 1968. Mrs. Elliott felt that her students were affected the most because they white, suburban children living in Iowa. It was extremely important for them to understand what was really going on in the world and to see how the world viewed African-Americans at that time. Living in a time where blacks were considered inferior to white people, less than, and not worthy of living, kids would be impacted the most because they are growing up listening to this everyday and she felt that it was a time for change.
“A Class Divided”, was recorded so that the world could see what she, one teacher from Iowa was trying to do. In the beginning of the class she immediately separated her students and labeled them “blue eyed” and “brown eyed” people. The same circumstances that affected black people were placed in affect with the “brown eyed” students. They were considered inferior to the “blue eyed” students and they were also treated different as well; they couldn’t eat, talk, play with, or even sit with the “blue eyed” people because the “brown eyed” people would either, steal their things, get them trouble or they might smell. To Jane Elliott’s surprise her students seemed to forget that they used to be friends with the opposite colored eyed people and they began to treat them differently automatically. The “blue eyed” people seemed to even act more superior to them and they had the feeling that they were better.
The next afternoon when her students came in she changed things around, the ‘brown eyed” people were better then the “blue eyed” people and the exact same situations applied to the “blue eyed” people that were in affect to the “brown eyed” people just the other day. Yet again the students were racially discriminatory towards the other students. At the end of the day, everything went back to normal and the students realized that people who look different then they do feel like they felt every day.
If third grade students and understand the situations that people of a different color go through how can adults not see to understand what they are doing? Jane Elliott’s class was and will still be a example of what people can do and what can happen when you manipulate them.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals

In reference to the novel Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell he doesn’t just look at how Blacks in the south and in the north were treated differently, but he also goes into detail the affect of slavery, Jews, Germans, education toward Blacks, and also southern whites. The title Black Rednecks and White Liberals is a title that catches the reader who just isn’t black or white but even of different minority as well as a different religion. A coming of age novel that doesn’t just isolate slavery and how blacks were made to be inferior but also how southern whites were the inferior ones way before slavery happened in America. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is the reveal of what really happened in America and what people were scared to say. Thomas Sowell’s book is a lifelong observation of racism, sexism, education, and the real history of America and its people.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals begins with the real history of America and how America has progresses throughout the years to get to what it is today. White people as we know them today were once never really in America to begin with. They came by ships from Europe, Ireland, Scotland, and other parts of the western half of Britain. Different types of groups came to the southern states of America like the Wales, Ulster, and Scots. As soon as they settled things began to change. Sowell goes on to tell us about the terms “redneck” and “cracker” which are now slang words that indicate a white person from the south or in general. Sowell educates us by telling us that these words weren’t just now introduced to us but that these words already existed way before slavery or even before the discovery of America. Brought over to America when the Scotland’s came over it was in Europe not a slang word but an ordinary meaning of a person. Bringing the word to America it was later turned into a slang term that Blacks and other minorities and even other whites now call each other.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals is an overview of life in America and all of the trials and tribulations that America has gone through. Thomas Sowell goes on to tell us about the most complicated and worst tragedy that has happened in America which is slavery. Not just slavery of African’s but also slavery of people in the south as well. Slavery in America was one the worst abominations that could have ever happened. Africans were taken from their homelands and forced them to do manual labor because white southerners especially were too lazy to do so. Thomas Sowell says that the southerners were extremely lazy and they felt that they were too good to do manual labor just because of who they were, they felt that the northerners were the sell outs because they didn’t have salves or as many slaves as they had. Before slavery or before anyone had ever even seen a blacks rapes, lynching, and the whole burning of the cross (Ku Klux Klan). These events happened way before slavery but was during slavery was much more prevalent. Rapes was a very normal thing when the young poor white servants ranging from as young as 12 years old. Lynching didn’t originate with the lynching of blacks that they feared, but it originated in the streets of Europe and Scotland. Men and women were lynched who they felt were a threat or have disrespected them in any way. When the settlers came over to America they brought with them all of there customs and they just happened to replace the white people with blacks due to slavery.

Thomas Sowell goes on to show us about the south and not just any part but the antebellum south. How everything that they brought with them we still us today. For example Sowell uses something that is very prevalent which is how Asian’s use American names for their first name like Michelle or Kevin. These names back in the 1800’s were used to depict where it was in the country that you lived and now these names are used in everyday life. Tomas Sowell’s book doesn’t just tell us about the history of America that we know it but he also tells us the truth even if we really don’t want to hear it, but it’s our history and we need to know exactly what really happened. Black Redneck and White Liberals isn’t a book for the type of person who only goes by what the history books tell us because Sowell breaks down the true meaning of the word history. Even though Sowell tells us in his words what he feels is the truth you still can’t really say that this happened because again no one was really there so we can’t just say that this happened or didn’t but he gives us a different out look of we were taught. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is a book that goes beyond the true meaning of the word history and he breaks things down so that we can understand them and also so that we can comprehend what it is that he has taught us.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals gives us the perspective of what happened during the time of slavery and even before. Educations which was a major factor that played a major role on society and how people were treated. Before slavery got to a state where nothing could be done with it there were educated blacks that had doctorial degrees and had very impressive jobs. One of these men was W.E.B. Dubois who was the first African American to graduate from Harvard University and obtain a PhD. Education was not common for all African Americans at this time. Most African American that was educated was called Mulatto or people with lighter skinned complexion. These particular groups of people were very educated and lived in nicer neighborhoods and as well had nicer jobs with higher income then the average African American or Black man. The Mulatto’s tended to stay with there own when it came to relationship as well as friends. They were easier to get along with, especially for the white people and they seemed to be a better breed of people in general. Sowell states that darker skinned Blacks seemed to be the complete opposite. They didn’t value education, the number of unwedded births seemed to double and the standard of living was somewhat savage to the people of the Mulatto. The dark Blacks weren’t the only ones who acted in this manner it seemed to also be the southern whites as well, and when the migration happened things started to change.

When southern blacks and whites migrated to the northern states everything that was good about the north seemed to be different. The crime rate increased, unwedded births, and education went down hill from the standards of schools to even attendance. Students from the south were always late and they seemed to not even care about there education and it wasn’t just blacks but also whites. Education was one of the things that the north was known for and when the southerners came the standards went down and with that the blacks were the one to blame so segregation came into affect to try to isolate the problem. They thought that southern blacks were the main reason why everything happened and the whites were forced to be with them and there influences made the white kids act the way that they did.

Slavery and Blacks and Whites weren’t they only group that was attacked with the cause of segregation, but also the Jews and the Germans. Jews at this time were in the same boat as Blacks, they were met to be inferior to Whites, but instead of whites it was Germans. The Jews had there own slavery to deal with which was the Holocaust. Millions of Jews were taken out of there homes and dragged into concentration camps. Like slavery they were forced to do manual labor, were beat, stripped of there religion, raped, but unlike slaves they were burned if they felt that they couldn’t work, most of which were the older people and the ill. Thomas Sowell tells us that people saw the Germans as not being human. What I didn’t understand is that if people felt that the Germans were not human but the Black race endured much more and for many more years but yet no one thought that what they were doing was wrong. I feel that it goes both ways especially when it is happening in your history and to your people.

As the concentration camps became a thing in the past the world started to ask other questions like why exactly were they being kept captive? Why was there religion something that was taken into serious affect? Some of these questions which still exist today have never been answered, but Thomas Sowell tries to explain to us his perspective. Mr. Sowell feels that most of this is because Hitler how was the leader of the whole thing felt that the religion of the so-called Jews was generic and that what they were believing was something like that of the devil. Hitler believed that they Jews were worshiping the devil and that they had to be cleansed of their religion and also of there spirit.

Thomas Sowell takes us through history and tries to tell us about our history as we see it today. He tries to let us see a new vision on the world and the world in the past. “The purpose of this book is to expose some of the most blatant misconceptions poisoning race relations in our time.”(Ix). His views on the world wasn’t just something that was made up, it was real and it was blunt. It showed us the truth and the best part was that he didn’t sugar coat anything, he gave it to us straight. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the truth about there past, present and even there future.
